Scenario:
The mission of The Growing Place Child Development Center ensures that all infant/toddler staff understand the integral role of relationships and attachment in healthy development. Young children are placed in groups with the same primary caregivers, as much as possible, throughout the time they are enrolled at the center. Rather than evaluate children only in specific areas of development, staff are encouraged to share examples with family members of how children are growing and learning in each of the developmental domains while also sharing with families the general knowledge of the developmental continuum. This information forms the basis for designing learning experiences and frames staff interactions with children. When a family member expresses concern that his/her child is not progressing as quickly as other children, staff take time to explain who the child is as an individual with respect for his or her unique strengths and challenges.

In your former director job, staff sometimes protested when you wanted to involve families in the program. They felt strongly that their program was theirs, and the teachers knew what was best for the children. In your current role as the director of a new center, you have the opportunity to involve families from the beginning. Analyze three ways the NAEYC Guideline for Developmentally Appropriate Practice: “Establishing Reciprocal Relationships With Families” will inform the way you interact, beginning with this first meeting, with family and staff members in order to promote respectful, reciprocal relationships.
