                                             People with Disabilities

People with Disabilities (PWD) face many
challenges each day.  

For this week’s discussion imagine having a
major disability (or if you have a disability and feel comfortable sharing your
thoughts, please do). How does this affect your activities of daily
living?  Answer these questions and respond to at least one other
student.

How do you carry out your day-to-day tasks? What do you notice?
What concerns you? How do others respond to you? What kind of support can you
rely on for help?

What kinds of family or personal activities are difficult for
you to carry out because of the disability?

Think about your health as a person with a disability. What are
your health care concerns and needs? What has been your experience with the
health care system and its providers? What do you want nurses and others to
understand about living with a disability? How might health care professionals
devalue and disempower you? How can nurses and other health care providers care
for you in a way that conveys respect and concern for you as a person?
