Identify the level of practice for APRNs in your state: full, restricted, or reduced

Order Instructions
This week’s work focuses on health policy from the advanced practice nurses’ perspective. One of the greatest challenges facing APRNs is the lack of a national policy that supports full-practice authority (FPA). With a strong focus on FPA, many fail to realize there are other barriers preventing APRNs from effectively providing care. In the two articles by Schorn et al. (2022) and Kleinpell et al. (2022) they present results from a study that identifies regulatory and non-regulatory barriers, along with institutional barriers that impact the practice of APRNs regardless of their state’s level of restriction.

One other area that gained attention during the pandemic was the use of telehealth for care delivery. There were both positive and negative results of the shift to telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic. A positive was that many who would not have had access to care, were able to receive it. On the other hand, it highlighted the disparities that exist in this country. Namely, the lack of access to reliable and affordable internet. In post-pandemic times, many of the loosened restrictions are returning and again are negatively affecting patients seeking care through telehealth. In the article by Schorn et al. (2022, November) the authors provide six recommendations specific to policy. Select one of these recommendations to expand upon. (Supports Student Learning Outcomes 3, 4, 5).

Discussion Question:

Identify the level of practice for APRNs in your state: full, restricted, or reduced. If you work in an unrestricted state, share the history of the legislation that occurred for this to become law. If you work in a restricted or reduced state, summarize any progress toward FPA that has occurred over the past 5 years. What were/are the greatest barriers?
Using the articles for this week, select a regulatory or non-regulatory barrier and document an action plan for initiating policy change. The article by Eden et al. (2021) can be used as a guide.
Identify and expand on one of the policy recommendations offered in the Schorn et al. (2022, November) article. Share any professional experience using telehealth in your practice, including whether your volume or processes were impacted during the pandemic. Summarize next steps for addressing your selected policy recommendation.
