Discussion Post 1:
One of the changes seen in higher education recently is the increased use of virtual reality (VR) platforms (EDUCASE, 2022). Two key areas mentioned as needing to be focused on was the improving of student performance and improving of student learning experiences (EDUCASE, 2022). This makes sense since the goal of introducing anything in the classroom is to enhance the learning that is supposed to take place. Classroom Management Software (CMS) such as Blackboard are used to facilitate online and distance learning but VR is significantly more immersive (Sharrab et al., 2023). If the CMS platforms used can offer classroom connections that are not restricted by space and time, then the VR platform can further build those connections by removing things such as place and setting. FazBoard is an Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis’s human-AI hybrid system that integrates teaching/learning materials with 24/7 access that leads to adjustments in the curriculum (EDUCASE, 2022). This type of access and availability would place the classroom in the lap of students like never before. Instructors would not have to have students make appointments but would just need to check on the reports of the AI to stay abreast with the progress of each student. This would free them to help those students who may truly be struggling. Instructors who teach language classes could also benefit from AI in their classrooms. The AI can assist the teacher in reading and conversation so that accurate pronunciation and accents would be used (Sharrab et al., 2023).
There are some concerns with AI in education. Some of these include that “pervasive use of AI would lead to an overly mechanical way of information processing, pragmatic approach, much focus on the knowledge rather than the aesthetic feelings, lesser room for teachers, ethical and security-related problems, and negative social effects in relationships (Gocen and Aydemir, 2020). These concerns are all stemming from the lack of human interaction. This aspect of learning can be crucial to certain students. If not present students who need this interaction may sink instead of soar in their academics. Continued research into these drawbacks would cause AI in education to become much more of a benefit than where it currently sits.

Discussion Post 2:
The change in higher education that caught my eye was the cost and value of college degrees. After COVID, the price of living went up, as well as the price of higher education. According to the reading (EDCAUSE,2022), “Other students will conclude that the traditional college degree no longer meets their personal and professional needs, or they will seek alternative opportunities for acquiring the knowledge, skills, and credentials they need for successful job placement and career advancement “(p.10). Others are deciding to take another route to become successful because they do not want to be in debt for the rest of their lives trying to pay off student loans. Looking at how things are now, having a degree sometimes is not valuable depending on what you are attending school for. Talking to my college friends, they explained that they would have to obtain a degree. Or two to get better pay if they want to advance in their career. However, that doesn’t guarantee they will receive the extra bump because years of experience also play a role. Some believe an associate degree and the new Bachelor’s degree are at specific jobs. According to White, If enrolling in college in 2023, you can expect your four-year undergraduate degree to cost you between $110,000 and around $240,000, depending on the type of school you attend (White, 2023).
Knowing how much money goes into school can cause anyone not to want to further their education. So much so that now schools are thinking about allowing students to pay for school with Bitcoin. “The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania has announced that students can now pay their tuition using Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USD Coin” (EDCAUSE,2022). This can change the game for higher education, and institution enrollment numbers can take a positive turn.

My Discussion Post:
A change in higher education covered in this week’s readings is the growing demand for student support services. Numerous factors, such as the shifting demographics of college students, the rising cost of tuition, and a greater emphasis on student success and retention, have contributed to this change.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics report, nearly two-thirds of all college undergraduates identified as non-traditional students, which means they are older than 24, financially independent, a single parent, or are working full-time while enrolled. These students now require more support services, such as childcare, flexible class scheduling, and financial aid, as a result of the demographic shift ( McFarland, 2019).
In addition, the need for support services to assist students in meeting their financial needs has grown as a result of the rising cost of tuition. In order to help students understand their financial options better, institutions have been increasing the amount of financial aid they offer and creating programs to do so.
Last but not least, a greater emphasis has been placed on student support services as a result of the focus on student success and retention. In order to help students stay on track academically and accomplish their goals, institutions are now providing a wide range of student services, such as academic advising, mentoring, and counseling.
Students and institutional practices have been significantly impacted by this change in higher education. It has given students a variety of tools to aid them in their academic endeavors, while it has also prompted institutions to create new services, reorganize existing ones, and hire more staff in order to better serve the needs of students.
