The suicide of David Kelly The diagnosis of suicide, especially by high profi le individuals, often creates controversy. For example, during the Hutton enquiry into the death of the UK government biological weapons expert Dr David Kelly in July 2003, the official verdict was death by suicide as a consequence of blood loss following him slitting his left wrist. This view has been challenged by some doctors who consider that since only one artery the ulnar artery was cut this would have been unlikely to lead to sufficient blood loss to be fatal. Subsequent to the Hutton enquiry, further controversy arose when it was revealed that the knife that Dr Kelly purportedly used lacked his fi ngerprints. It is difficult to comprehend how Dr Kelly could have employed the knife without leaving his prints on it (he was not wearing gloves and none were found near the scene of his death) or why he might have attempted to wipe them off. When an artery is cut through completely, its thick muscular walls spontaneously contract and this reduces bleeding. This explains why people who lose a limb in an industrial accident or during a battle have been known to walk or crawl away, sometimes for long distances and also, possibly, why Dr Kelly s body was surrounded by relatively little blood. It should also be noted that a person slashing their neck or wrists might die as a result of an air embolism rather than blood loss. In this case, air enters the cut ends of the veins and travels back to the right atrium of the heart where it causes a cardiac arrest. Similarly, when the throat is cut, death may result from asphyxiation when blood enters the lungs.
